What is the Fitzpatrick Skin Type System?
The Fitzpatrick scale is a way of classifying skin based on its natural colouring and how it typically responds to sun exposure.
It ranges from Type I to Type VI, from very fair skin that tends to burn easily through to deeply pigmented skin.
While it was originally developed for dermatology, understanding these differences can also be useful when we're considering how a spray tan may look on different skin tones.
Because when it comes to tanning, one shade definitely doesn't suit everyone.
Why does your spray tan skin type matter?
Your spray tan skin type can help us understand how different shades and depths of colour may work with your natural colouring.
Think of your natural skin tone as the starting point.
Two people could have the exact same spray tan solution applied and end up with slightly different results because their underlying skin tones are different.
That's why we look at you, rather than simply asking, "Light, medium or dark?"
Your natural colouring, how deep you'd like to go and what you're getting tanned for can all help determine the finished look.
Fair skin can still have a beautiful bronze
If you're naturally very fair, getting a spray tan doesn't mean you need to suddenly look five shades darker.
A softer glow can add warmth and colour while still looking completely natural against fair skin.
